Friday March 14th
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Our Integrated Topic in the
Years 1 and 2 team this term is called Kotahitanga, Getting Along Together. One
of our focus areas is around the importance of family – we are thinking and
talking about the families we live with as well as our ‘school’ family, and in
both cases the roles and responsibilities that the children have.
Tying in with this, we are
planning a school sleepover (Noho Kura) for the children. This will be held on Friday, April 11th.
There will be school as usual
on that Friday, but then at 5:45 p.m. we shall all return to school after tea
with pyjamas, toothbrushes and teddies. We shall play some games, have supper
and bedtime stories, and then settle down to sleep in the school hall.
In the morning we shall all
have breakfast together, after which you are able to take your tired little
offspring home!
Please think about helping us
– it’s going to be lots of fun!!
Be assured that we shall be
prepared for every contingency. If you would like to discuss any concerns you
or your child may have, please do talk to your child’s teacher.
Here are some details of our
sleepover:
Please bring your children
back to school at 5:45 p.m.
They will need to have had
dinner. It will be much easier if they are wearing the clothes that you would
like them to wear the next day – it’ll save having to pack an extra set of
clothes!
What
to bring:
- Pyjamas
- Slippers or socks
- Sleeping bag and/or duvet
- Pillow
- Teddy bear, cuddly or favourite soft toy
- Facecloth, hairbrush/comb
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
Programme:
Evening:
- 5:45 – arrive, spaces allocated in Hall,
organize bedding and belongings
- 6:45 – teachers take roll, karakia and
singing
- 7:00 – games with classmates and teacher
- 7:30 – supper
- 8:00 – pyjamas, teeth, toilet, then bedtime
stories in small groups
- Settle down for the night
In
the morning:
- 6:30 – 7:00 – children will stay in bed for
as long as possible!
- 7:00 – up, dressed and packed
- 7:30 – breakfast
- 8:00 – 9:00 – farewell
We are seeking someone who
would be willing to give a karakia on the Friday evening, including welcoming
everyone and blessing our event. In the past, we have had a parent who is
versed in the protocols around holding a noho and who is happy to take on this
responsibility for us. We would love it if you felt you could do this for us.
Please see your child’s teacher if you are willing – please don’t be offended
if you offer and we have already filled the role!
Please note that daylight
saving ends on April 6th, and as a result we have adjusted some of
our times from past noho kura events to reflect the earlier sunset.
Please
fill in the permission form below and return
to your child’s teacher by Friday, March 21st 2014.
It is most important that we
have accurate contact details, so that we can get hold of you quickly if we
need to.
If you offer to help
overnight, we shall be making contact closer to the sleepover night to organise
a meeting and discuss possible areas of responsibility (for example, organising
supper).
We are looking forward to a
great night!
Best wishes,
Gail Hulme, Rowena Barker,
Hayley Ngan, Anna Reid, Amber Donovan and Amy Buick

Notice for Room 4 parents and caregivers:
18 February
2014
Dear
Parents/Caregivers
We’ve had a
great start to the school year in Team Koru. There are lots of lovely
friendships forming across Rooms 3 and 4, and children have settled into the
daily learning routine well. A huge thank you to everyone for helping your
children learn at home – listening to them read daily, playing with the alphabet
and number flashcards, and beginning their home learning. Below are a few short
notices:
·
Home learning books came home
yesterday (Monday). They have a distinct cover, which children are invited to
decorate and “personalise”. Books go home on Monday and need to come back to
school on or before Friday. There will be an alternate alphabet / numeracy
focus each week – pictures can be cut out of magazines or drawn which begin
with the focus letter, and numeracy activities can be completed together. In
the back of your child’s home learning book is a list of essential spelling words, along with a guide to
teaching spelling. Feel free to explore words on list 1 and 2 at home, as this
will complement our daily in-class spelling programme.
·
Library folders (usually slightly
larger than daily reading folders) holding library books can be kept at home
all week for children to enjoy and read. They need to be bought back to school
on or before each Tuesday morning, as this is our library day. Children love exploring
and issuing books. They are only able to issue new books once their previous
two are returned.
·
If you haven’t already, please bookmark and subscribe
to teamkorubeckenham.blogspot.co.nz. News,
events, and learning snapshots are regularly posted to this blog; it’s a great
way to keep in touch with what’s happening in the classroom.
·
News in the morning has an oral language focus, where
children can discuss their exciting events and experiences. Toys and other treasures (electronics, jewellery,
accessories etc.) need to be kept at home. If they are bought to school
there is a risk of them being lost / stolen / broken, and this usually ends in
tears L Beckenham School
·
And finally, swimming
lessons for the Room 4 children will begin next week! Yay! The timetable
will be finalised this Friday. As of Monday 24th February, children
will need to bring NAMED swimming togs that fit, a NAMED towel, optional NAMED
goggles, and a plastic bag for wet items, all in a NAMED swimming bag. Thank
you in advance!
Kind regards,
Hayley Ngan
